Replay – Animation

April 25, 2010

In a destroyed world, the only glimpse of hope is the memory of a forgotten past. But be careful not to let your dreams control your mind…This is Replay an amazing animated short film.

Observador Participante Tecno-Social

March 30, 2010

The McDistance Map

March 29, 2010

Where The Buffalo Roamed

the McDistance Map – the Midwest United States as visualized by the distance to the nearest McDonald’s:

You can download a bigger, wallpaper-ready version of the visualization, too!

As expected, McDonald’s cluster at the population centers and hug the highway grid.  East of the Mississippi, there’s wall-to-wall coverage, except for a handful of meager gaps centered on the Adirondacks, inland Maine, the Everglades, and outlying West Virginia.

For maximum McSparseness, we look westward, towards the deepest, darkest holes in our map: the barren deserts of central Nevada, the arid hills of southeastern Oregon, the rugged wilderness of Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains, and the conspicuous well of blackness on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota.  There, in a patch of rolling grassland, loosely hemmed in by Bismarck, Dickinson, Pierre, and the greater Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis metropolitan area, we find our answer.

Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!

Suffer a Big Mac Attack out there, and you’re hurtin’ for certain!  For a coupla hours, at least, unless graced by the tender blessings of “manna from heaven” – that is, a fast food air drop from the Medi-Copter.

Update: See “The Hungry Midwest” for a regional zoom of this map.

Tools for Sketching User Experiences

March 29, 2010

“In this article, I’ll expound on the tools I use every day to design interfaces and experiences. I’ve spent years trying a variety of tools, and so far, analog tools such as markers, notebooks and paper templates have proved to be the most effective because of their constraints and flexibility.

Sketching communicates ideas

Our brains are the ultimate tool for solving problems. But it’s hard to share ideas when they’re locked away in our heads. Sketching frees our ideas from our mind allowing others to see them. A visual representation of an idea has the capacity to be shared, collaborated upon, and improved. Whether I’m trying to show the hierarchy of an information architecture, or document the nuanced interactions of a web site, sketching has proved itself to be my most valued tool for giving form to my ideas.

I have always enjoyed sketching. However, I wasn’t always good at sketching. Like most skills, if you’re not born with the ability you can acquire it by producing volumes of work. If you’re avoiding sketching because your sketches aren’t pretty, rest assured you’re not alone. I recommend breaking the habit by making 1 sketch, every day. Pick an object in your environment and draw it. Don’t erase and don’t be too critical. Do that for a month, and I guarantee you’ll be a better sketcher in 30 days…”
